SEMERA is based on four pillars:

Scientific skills

Acquire necessary competencies for health research in following areas: scientific career and planning, research skills, methods, communicative, soft and social skills, from idea to publication and presentation.

Scientific project

Work on your own project according to your research interests with the support of an experienced mentor, applying the learned scientific skills. You can either start or continue working on your doctoral dissertation or degree thesis, or another scientific paper.

Intercultural social program

We offer you the opportunity to connect with international students in a relaxed and intercultural atmosphere. Get ready to build your research network!

Keynote lectures

International experts will talk about current and future global issues in the context of health and empirical research. Join the discussion afterwards and become part of the scientific community.

Overview

The program takes place at our university or virtually, it is 12 weeks long and is offered twice a year:
Spring Semester = Middle of February to middle of May
Autumn Semester = September to November

The program consists of 15 ECTS: this includes the scientific skills classes as well as the two Milestones

SEMERA

On-Campus
Our SEMERA full-time program takes place on site at RWTH Aachen University. SEMERA is for advanced undergraduate medical students. It consists of classes on scientific skills, which you can apply to your own research project. The program itself is free of charge. However, there is a semester service fee due each semester.
Please note: full-time SEMERA is for medical students only! If you are a student of another health profession, check out our vSEMERA part-time program.

ASSESSMENT
Participants will have to complete the tasks and activities specified for each course within the program and the two milestones.

Milestone 1:
Write a research proposal about the scientific project you are working on during the program.
Milestone 2:
Make a scientific poster of your scientific project and present it to your peers in the poster walk.

After successfully completing the program, participants obtain a comprehensive description and a Transcript of Records. In addition, RWTH Aachen University medical students receive a certificate according to the Qualifikationsprofil within our medical curriculum.

APPLICATION

    Required application documents:
  • a B1 level English language certificate (A1 German is helpful for everyday life but not mandatory)
  • CV
  • transcript of records
  • letter of motivation stating your academic interests and your ideas for scientific career prospects (250 words max.)

vSemera

Online
Our vSEMERA part-time program takes place entirely in the digital world, provided by a one of a kind virtual learning platform. vSEMERA is for advanced undergraduate health professions students. The Faculty of Medicine of the RWTH Aachen University hosts the program in cooperation with the Centro Universitário Christus (Fortaleza, Brazil) and the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (Lima, Peru). We are honoured to provide the program to all students completely free of charge.

Please note: health profession students can participate via any electronic mobile device from everywhere. If you are interested in visiting Aachen, check out our full-time SEMERA program (for medical students only!).
